Strengthening our military

Heritage experts are working hard to share the conservative solutions to critical issues our nation is facing–and they are being heard.

On Wednesday, Heritage’s National Security team briefed the House Armed Services Committee and laid out key assessments of our military drawing from Heritage’s 2018 Index of Military Strength.

General Tom Spoehr, the Director of Heritage’s Center for National Defense, said:

“It is a critical time as the Congress considers the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, as well as, prepares to receive the Trump Administration’s first built from the ground defense budget for 2019.  As the Index of Military Strength reports, America’s military is under considerable strain as it is underfunded and too small to protect U.S. national interests.”

Overall, the 2018 Index concludes that the current U.S. military force is likely capable of meeting the demands of a single major regional conflict while also attending to various presence and engagement activities but that it would be very hard-pressed to do more and certainly would be ill-equipped to handle two nearly simultaneous major regional contingencies.
